Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine!
The University of Manitoba’s Department of Family Medicine (DFM) is one of 20 academic departments within the Max Rady College of Medicine in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. It is a world-class program following the College of Family Physicians of Canada’s Triple-C competency-based curriculum.
The Department of Family Medicine offers distributed medical education in which learners train at multiple, diverse sites and communities, with academic support from UM. The Family Medicine training program, which is accredited by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), provides clinical research, teaching and leadership experience in a variety of settings that prepares residents to serve the needs of Manitobans, Canadians, and the world throughout their careers.
The Department of Family Medicine offers education in undergraduate medical education, postgraduate medical education, enhanced skills, and physician assistant studies. It also offers training for internationally educated physicians who wish to practice in Canada.
The Department of Family Medicine is served by close to 130 paid administrators and faculty members. Additionally, all educators serving at clinical sites who may come into academic contact with DFM learners during their studies must hold a contract with UM. These potential educators are referred to nil-salary appointments (NSAs), and number about 800 within the DFM alone.
